Manchester United stars cancel Christmas party after crushing Champions League exit

Manchester United's players have cancelled their Christmas party in the wake of the club's humiliating Champions League debacle.

The squad were due to go out in Manchester on Sunday night but decided to call if off after Tuesday's defeat in Wolfsburg saw Louis van Gaal's side crash out at the group stage and drop into the Europa League.

Unlike Newcastle's players, who have had a seasonal fancy dress getaway cancelled by club officials, Old Trafford captain Wayne Rooney and the rest of the squad are said to have taken it on themselves to cancel the players' night out without any pressure from Van Gaal because they did not want to be seen out celebrating at a difficult time for the club.

Defeat in Germany was preceded by three disappointing draws against West Ham, Leicester City, and PSV Eindhoven as United headed out of the Champions League and lost ground in the title race.

Van Gaal has also come under fire from former United players over his tactics amid renewed speculation that the current squad are unhappy with his management style.

United's problems continued to pile up on Thursday after Bastian Schweinsteiger was hit with a three-match ban for violent conduct.

The German midfielder accepted his FA charge over an incident involving West Ham's Winston Reid last weekend, leaving United without up to 10 players for Saturday's trip to Bournemouth.
